Making wiser food choices for our family has been a major focus this year. While we still indulge in moderation, we’ve seen the positive impact nutritious food picks have on our well-being and that in itself is worth maintaining. Part of living a healthier lifestyle for our gang means being a little more sugar aware, and making adjustments where we can.
Except this time of year always makes healthy meal choices a bit tricky, with fun holidays like Thanksgiving and Halloween with lots of savoury desserts and sugary treats made part of celebrations, for instance. Also, the time change makes us all a bit sluggish in the mornings, and a demanding after-school activity schedule means meal prep needs to be quick and convenient. The best food choices, then, are those that are easy to make, while not compromising on nutrition.
So, we were all pretty pumped to see that our favourite cereals fit these criteria. Our family faves – Rice Krispies ®, Corn Flakes ® and Special K ® – time-honoured and trusted cereals by Kellogg Canada are categorized under the “Sugar Wise ™” selection because they each contain simply 1-4 grams of sugar per serving. There are (5) total, and the options also include Rice Krispies ® Brown Rice and Crispix®. All are easy to find on store shelves with the easy to identify “Sugar Wise ™” logo.
As parents of a large brood, finding foods all four kids enjoy, they can prep themselves, that are convenient, low in sugar and nutritious is a major parenting win!
No matter the systems we have in place to keep our gang moving, time is never really on our side on school mornings, so knowing we’re sending them off with a quick yet healthy meal including wholesome ingredients like wheat, corn and rice, that they already enjoy the taste of, helps keep our crazy train moving along – shenanigans and all.
We’re all especially happy we didn’t need to make modifications to the morning meals we already love, and I’ve been trying to set a good example by eating my breakfast with them too. I love Special K® with strawberries, bananas, blueberries and almond slices!
Since breakfast for dinner is often a winner around here, getting a bowl of cereal in the kids before a big hockey game or practice takes the pressure off of a healthy dinner scramble some nights as well. Our oldest even pointed out Rice Krispies ® made our provincial hockey association’s list of “top shelf” meals to have before hockey…bonus!
We know we’re not the only parents who care about what’s on nutrition labels, especially the quantity of sugar that can be present in foods kids enjoy, so it’s a great feeling knowing the cereals they already find so yummy also make the grade.
Now that we’ve made sure our mornings/evenings run a little smoother with a quick and nutritious breakfast/dinner, we’ve got a little time to work on getting us all out the door in an orderly fashion!

There is lots of iron in cereal too. Good for the older crowd wih with Health issues. Cereal and fruit are always a good combination.
Good point! Cereal + fruit was a great option when I was iron deficient in my pregnancies and postpartum!
