Our Winters are long, our schedules full, and our weary parenting souls were in need of a reset by January’s end. We found a pocket in the kids’ schedules and knew it was time to invest in our well-being & some much needed couple time to connect. We’re grateful for Nana and Papa who step in when they know we need a break, and heading to Northumberland Heights Wellness Retreat & Spa a fantastic choice. Just over an hour away from home, the property is close enough for a short, worry-free sans kiddos escape, yet far enough to feel like we were off the grid. If you’re feeling the need for rejuvenation too, here are reasons to consider Northumberland Heights for your own wellness retreat with your favourite people to revive your weary Winter (or any season) soul & connect with the ones who matter most (*stick around because we’re giving away a special treat to kick-start the Month of Love!*):
*Disclosure: we received a complimentary overnight package including accommodations, meals & spa services to facilitate this review. As always, all opinions are our own*
With an overnight package, you’ll be appointed one of 14 suites. The venue opened just over a year ago, so rooms are modern and very clean. If appointed Room #15 NH Garden Spa Suite (aka the “Honeymoon Suite”), prepare to be spoiled – a super comfy King Bed, spacious lounge area with 65” flat screen & serene colour-changing electric fireplace, walk-out terrace with views of the sprawling Northumberland Hills, sweet touches like a platter of fruit & Perrier beverages upon check in & turn-down service + fine chocolates come nighttime await you. And one of the most impressive features?
Your own sp-ah oasis right in your room with massive jacuzzi tub & steam shower to help melt away that built up tension. Seriously, such a treat, as was waking up to pure silence and watching the sun rise while sipping coffee on our back porch.
Tips: Garden suites are on the lower level & include a walk-out porch. Upper level Comfort suites do not. Also, not all suites come with in-room spa, but there are outdoor hot tubs for guests to enjoy open until 7p.m. For all room types & inclusions, check out their overnight packages starting at $300 HERE
Relaxation is their specialty, so no need to overpack. When you check-in, you and your guest will be gifted a cozy track suit to wear and lounge around in for your whole stay – even to dinner if you wish!
Northumberland Heights rests on 80 acres of sprawling grounds with gorgeous views of Northumberland hills. Forest bathing along their outdoor trails was the nature therapy and reset we needed.
Hungry is not a feeling you’ll be leaving with. We enjoyed high tea in their lounge area shortly after arrival. A nice array of finger sandwiches (tuna + cucumber & cream cheese), appetizer crisps, fruit kebob and chocolate mousse! Wash it down with your choice of tea – the berry blend was lovely. High tea is offered between 3-5 p.m. Don’t miss it like we almost did!
Breakfast is served between 7:30 – 10 a.m. A nice light offering with cereals, breads, fruit, tea/coffee selections and an interactive omelette station to fuel your morning with. All meals are served in their spacious, modern dining room. The lavish bistro-booths were so special and intimate.
Lunch and dinner are prepped by culinary talent Chef Liam Potvin. His passion for pleasing and plating shines through and we were in gastro-heaven during our dining experiences. For lunch, the “Grilled Cheese” stuffed with prosciutto, aged cheddar cheese, kale & apple is a must-try, and for dinner, well all the best trying to make a selection from so many mouth-watering options.
Chef Liam could sense our indecisiveness and treated us to a special “surprise” tasting menu! He indulged us with the Strawberry Salad & Tomato Cream Soup to start, and outdid himself with the Squash Ravioli, Spicy Stuffed Chicken and advanced tasting of the Steak & Frites entrée he’ll be serving as part of their Valentine’s Day Menu this month.
And just when we thought we couldn’t devour another morsel, you’ll not want to miss his dessert offering. The freshly made Peanut Butter Semifreddo was UNREAL – we would buy this by the tub if we could.
NOTE: your food satisfaction is Chef Liam’s goal and he’ll happily custom-prep plates to accommodate allergies/dietary restrictions. Advanced notice is appreciated, but he’s been known to whip up magic on-demand too. There’s also the option to book an interactive cooking class with Chef Liam for those looking for a unique culinary experience to add to your stay! Finally, alcoholic beverages are not included with the dining feature, but there is a nice selection of spirits & vinos (the Corposso by Colaneri Winery of Niagara was lovely!) or bring your own night cap of choice like we did too.
NEAT FACT: the venue was formerly a German Schnitzel restaurant flocked to and wildly popular with locals. A nod to the venue’s roots, Chef Liam kept Schnitzel on the menu 😊
A $120 spa credit per person is included for each guest through the overnight package. We chose the Aromatherapy Bliss massage from the International Therapies menu, and were pampered in the couples’ treatment room. It was WONDERFUL – one of us reached a level of relaxation to fall deep asleep (snores and all 😉 – not me!).
You’ll have access to the clean, well-maintained change rooms before/after your service with a lockable storage cube and large bright showers. The sauna and steam room were a nice post-massage touch, as well as the hydration and skin care stations with lemon-infused water, lotions and body care toiletries.
For guests looking to further their zen-like experience, a complimentary yoga class is offered each morning at 10 a.m. Book with front desk to secure your spot.
I’m already dreaming of a return to enjoy another spa experience (I’ve got my mind on a unique Ayurveda treatment), but what really made a lasting impression was the warmth and attentiveness from the staff. The seamlessness of our booking with Dory, the friendly welcome & tour by Tanya, the attention to detail & attentive service by Robert really made our short, but soul-fuelling stay truly special. Meeting Co-Owner Heena was a pleasure, and knowing the venue is newish with opportunities for growth, she’s eager and most willing to act on feedback to please her guests and ensure it’s exactly the experience they’re searching for. Updates to landscaping are in this year’s plans, and long-term expansion visions include stand alone cabins and outdoor pool.
What I think discerning guests will love about their experience is while there is well-thought out packages available, Northumberland Heights also prides itself on creating custom experiences. Want to visit for a meal and/or spa service only? No problem. Have a special occasion or corporate retreat coming up and you want a place that you can have all to yourselves for an exclusive experience? Yup…they can make that happen too!
